Installing equipment into equipment
How to record an installation or removal, how service state travels, and what the equipment list shows
What installation means
You can record one piece of equipment as installed in another. A reserve goes in a container. A lineset goes on a canopy.
Recording installations is optional. If you record none, your equipment stays a plain list.
The Installations tab
Each equipment record has an Installations tab.
Installed in reads upward. It shows what this equipment is installed in, all the way to the top.
Contains reads downward. It shows everything installed in this equipment, at every depth.
Each row names the installation date and service state. If a component makes this equipment out of service, the tab names it.
Record an installation
You can write this from either end. Both make the same record.
From the equipment that will contain the component:
- Open it and open the Installations tab.
- Select Add a component.
- Choose the equipment that went in.
- Give the day it happened.
- Select Record it.
From the component itself:
- Open it and open the Installations tab.
- Select Install it in something.
- Choose what it went into.
- Give the day it happened.
- Select Record it.
Use the day the work happened, not the day you type it.
Each picker shows the likely equipment first. From the containing end, that is recently removed equipment, then equipment installed in nothing. From the component end, it is equipment installed in nothing. Search finds anything else by marking, serial or model.
The note is free text. You can leave it empty.
Record a removal
From the equipment that contains the component:
- Open it and open the Installations tab.
- Select Remove on the row.
- Give the day it happened.
- Select Record the removal.
From the component itself, select Remove it instead of Remove. The rest is the same.
Removing a component records that somebody took it out. It is not the same as never having recorded where it was.
If the component contains other equipment, that equipment stays with it. A canopy removed from a rig keeps its lineset.
Move a component
Open the component and select Change what it is in. Choose the second piece of equipment. That is one record, and it names one day.
You can also do it in two steps. Remove the component from the first piece of equipment, then install it in the second. The second picker lists it under Recently removed. Two records name two days, which is truer when the component sat out for a week.
There is no swap action. Taking one component out and putting a different one in is always two records.
What KitNDocs refuses
KitNDocs refuses an installation that puts equipment inside itself.
It does not check what fits where. The record holds what you say about your equipment.
Installation changes need a certificate
An installation or removal takes the changed equipment out of service. The changed equipment is the one whose contents changed.
If you install a reserve in a container, the container waits for a certificate. The reserve does not, unless its own contents changed.
One certificate can cover equipment and everything installed in it. Certify the top piece of equipment after you record the installations. What a certificate covers explains the rule.
The certifying screen shows the change under Installation changes, with the day it happened. Tick the box to confirm that the equipment and what is installed in it have been inspected. The tick does not release the equipment. The certificate does that.
Out of service travels up
A component that is out of service takes everything above it out of service.
If a reserve is out of service while installed in a rig, the rig is out of service too. The rig record names the reserve as the reason.
This travels up only. A rig that is out of service does not make the reserve inside it out of service.
When the component returns to service, the equipment above it returns too if nothing else holds it.
Removing the component also ends this reason. The removal is a change, so the parent equipment then waits for a certificate of its own.
The equipment list
The equipment list shows top-level equipment first. Equipment installed inside something does not get its own top-level row.
Use the arrow on a row to show what is inside it.
Tick Every piece in the filter rail to show each piece of equipment as its own row. This filter appears only after you record an installation.
Filters work in both views. Search finds equipment wherever it is installed.
There is no separate record for a built-up rig. The rig is the equipment at the top of the chain.
What this does not do
Installing equipment does not move counts. A reading on a rig is not a reading on the reserve inside it.
Installing equipment does not remove anything from your equipment list. Folded rows still contain every piece you recorded.
KitNDocs does not model straps, links or physical attachment. It records which equipment you say is installed in which equipment.
There is no edit action. If an installation or removal is wrong, record the correct act against the correct day. The wrong entry stays visible.
