Recording equipment with no model
How to record a camera pole, a windsock or a shed radio, what KitNDocs holds for that equipment, and what it does not
When you need this
Most equipment has a manufacturer and a product name. A Gin Bolero 5 is a model, and you record your wing against it.
Some equipment has neither. A camera pole somebody made in a shed has no maker and no part number. So has a windsock, and so has the radio in the packing room.
Record that equipment under its category. KitNDocs adds nothing to the catalogue, because there is no product to add.
How to record it
- Press Add equipment.
- Select Record something with no model, at the foot of the catalogue.
- Select the category, or select Something else… and type a new one.
- Type the marking and serial number if the equipment has them.
- Press Record equipment.
You do not have to search first. The button is there the moment the catalogue opens.
If you narrow the catalogue to one category, the button names that category and KitNDocs does not ask you again. A row appears in the list as well. The row carries the category name, with No model below it, and it does what the button does.
The row sits at the foot of the list. Where the category holds no models, that row is the only one there. An empty result is not a dead end.
The row appears only where you narrow to one category. Where you narrow to none, or to more than one, there is no row and the button stays.
Coining a category
A category is what kind of thing the equipment is. Reserve, wing and camera pole are categories.
You can add a category from this screen. Before, you could only add a category while adding a model, so naming camera pole meant first calling a camera pole a product.
A category you add belongs to your organisation. Other operators do not see it.
KitNDocs gives the new category the sport that staff assigned to your organisation.
What the record holds
Equipment with no model is a full record. It does everything other equipment does:
- It goes on a maintenance schedule.
- It carries tasks, and you complete them.
- It takes readings.
- It holds issues and defects.
- It carries documents and tags.
- You sign for it on a certificate.
- It counts in your equipment totals.
On screen, the category stands where a model name stands. A row reads Camera pole where the row beside it reads Gin Bolero 5.
What KitNDocs does not do
KitNDocs shows no manufacturer for this equipment. It shows no size and no part number. There is nothing to show, and KitNDocs does not write Unknown.
KitNDocs does not add a model to the catalogue when you record equipment this way. Nothing you record here reaches another operator.
There is no control to attach a model later. If your equipment turns out to have a maker and a product name, tell us and we will attach it. The record keeps its id, its tasks and its history.
When to add a model instead
Add a model when the equipment has a manufacturer and a product name, even if the catalogue does not hold it yet.
A model is worth adding because it compounds. The next piece of the same product takes two fields. See About models and manufacturers.
Record with no model only when there is no product behind the thing.
